Senior / Principal Software Engineer (26744)

Cambridge / Mostly Remote / Hybrid
£60,000 to £80,000 DoE + Benefits

Part of a small expert team working on power electronic applications

This Cambridge based team is a key group of expert engineers. With German parents, they are well-financed, but small enough to work nimbly and innovatively on novel solutions used in green energy applications.

They are currently looking to recruit their next team member who will be involved on R&D and product development projects based on embedded systems technologies. As an experienced engineer, you can choose the best working arrangements (either mostly remote, office-based or a hybrid mode – on average, engineers go into the office about once per week). Further, there is some occasional travel to Germany to meet colleagues.

To give you a taste of the technologies used, their legacy code is in C, but most of what they do nowadays is in C++. They are not wedded to any particular language and have dabbled with Rust as well. Whilst there’s embedded software, they have PC based tools written in C# and scripts in Python and Bash. Most of the platform is developed on Linux using a variety of toolchains. Their team collaborate and work together, and it would not be unusual if discussions included power electronics and FPGAs.

Requirements:

  • Degree in computer Science, Electronics or similar.
  • Demonstrable experience writing low level software and building complex systems.
  • Unfazed about legacy codebases and interested to use new technologies.
  • Experience with C, and ideally C++. Must have experience of embedded (including bare-metal) software development.
  • Project experience will have included drivers, compilers, timers or similar (understanding and developing software that runs efficiently on hardware is important).
  • Experience with the Linux kernel including knowledge of power electronics control systems or motor drives.

The role is suited to someone who understands the complexities of low level code development, and knows how to prioritise their day and time accordingly. On offer is an excellent salary and benefits.
